Spending an evening with my beautiful bride brings me joy. Watching my daughter during the halftime show at the local high school, that brings me joy. Playing video games with my son brings me joy.
In a world of such doom and gloom, it's really hard to find stuff that actually brings us joy. Real joy. Joy that makes your heart "smile".
Finding joy in your job can be difficult. But it's there, you just need to look for it. Ill use my profession, 9-1-1 dispatching as an example. See, in my job, I get to talk to people on their worst days. No one calls me and wishes me a good day. The people I talk to are generally not happy with life and I am the last person they want to talk to.
This is where joy comes into play.
I find joy in my job because I know that I am there for these people who are in their lowest when they dial 9-1-1. I am their voice of calming, soothing and there to hear all their troubles. Sometimes, it is really hard not to start drawing conclusions or taking sides.
Sometimes it's easy to speak to them in my "fatherly" voice. Especially when they don't listen to me.
The point being, we can be surrounded with all the negative stuff in the world, and yet still find joy that lightens our hearts.
It's out there.
We just need to look for it.
So remember, the next time you're not in a very good mood, stop and think what put you in that state. Bills, car repairs, stress at home?
Is it really worth your time to spend the rest of the day angry? The only person it really affects is you.
Why not spend the day laughing. Do something spontaneous. Pay for someone's coffee. Hold a door open for someone, smile and wish them a good day!
That will help lighten your mood.
And that, my friends, is where the joy is.
Have a great rest of the week!
