ISIS Militants need an intro to Islam

Dear IS Militants, this is a letter to introduce you to Islam and what an Islamic State is supposed to look like

Your stated goal is to create a Caliphate, and your method is to use military force, mass murder, kidnappings, and destruction of property. Creating an Islamic state sounds like a beautiful idea but you have no idea what an Islamic State means. Your use of the word Islam in your plan is smart, in that you will sell the fear of Islam by your actions and then tie any action against you as being against Islam to gain supporters. Not very original, but it's a concept that has worked for others misusing religion to justify their actions, so I suppose you were bound to test your luck with it too.

I am certain that you and your leaders are neither scholars in Islam nor have you studied even the basics in Islamic history, so here I decided to show a little Midwestern hospitality and give you a free lesson.

The very first Islamic state was created by a man I'm sure you've heard of;  his name was Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).  I know you folks aren't much for enlightenment or reading but because you choose to use the name of Islam and God to justify yourselves, it's only fair that you should learn a little something about Islam.

And make not God's name an excuse in your oaths against doing good, or acting rightly, or making peace between persons; for God is One Who heareth and knoweth all things.

Surah Al-Baqarah - Chapter 2, Verse 224 - The Quran

The first written Constitution of the very first Islamic nation was declared by the Prophet himself way back in 622AD. In it and the charters he drafted, he included not only Muslims, but also the Jews, Christians, and all other non-Muslim tribes within the nation.  He even included the allies of the non-Muslim tribes to give them all equal rights and protections.

Stop and think about that for a minute and let the gears in your head get some exercise. The Prophet, the man whom every Muslim admires and strives to be like, created what was the first Islamic nation and within that nation he didn't just take into account his followers but every citizen regardless of their faith.

These charters he drafted included legal and equal rights to all.  It gave non-Muslims rights to own land, and for their places of worship to be respected and protected. It established that "non-Muslims have the same right to life and protection like Muslims" Non-Muslims were considered one community alongside Muslims and the duty was imposed on Muslims to defend and respect the non-Muslims within the community and vice versa.

Houses of worship for the Jews and Christians were declared sacred and protected. No one was allowed to destroy, damage, or steal from them.

Islam teaches us to focus on our inner self and to respect and honor our neighbors, families, and all peace loving people.

Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in Allah(God) and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

Sura Al-Baqara (The Cow) No. 2 (Verses 62) -  Qur'an

These are just a few highlights to get you to start to think about your actions and how they relate to Islam and how Prophet Muhammad set forth the rules of governance.

So what exactly has the Islamic State been up to in its quest to create a Caliphate? You started with mass murdering Muslims and destroying Masjids of people that didn't adhere to your versions of religion and refused to pledge allegiance to your leader.

Let there be no compulsion in religion. [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 256] - Qur'an

After you got your fill of terrorizing and trying to control the Muslims of Iraq you moved onto the Christians minorities.  Forcing them to flee their homes under the threat of murder..  This "convert or die" mandate has no place in Islam. God forbids the taking of life and has expressly stated that there can be no force in religion.

You also don't plan to stop at Iraq; you want to dominate pretty much the entire Middle East and beyond. You have even gone as far as to declare your leader as the unquestioned leader of every Muslim. You may have lucked out and scored on weapons and equipment the US Army left behind, but your bombs and guns only amplify that fact that your practices, your laws, and your disregard for property, places of worship, and human life proves you are the oppressors.  The fact that what you are doing in Iraq is completely the opposite of what was taught to Muslims as the way to lead and govern proves that your mission has nothing to do with Islam.

And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)?- Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!"  Surah An-Nisa, Chapter 4, Verse 75 - Quran

The Quran and Sunnah (teachings of the Prophet) justify war only when an oppressor attacks you. As a means of defense of the weak and the ill-treated.  The people of Iraq, the Muslims and Christians were not oppressing you or anyone for that matter. They were trying to establish their nation and live their lives side by side in peace as they have done for ages until you marched in and started killing them!

You are invading their land and destroying their homes and breaking the covenant set forth by the Quran and re-affirmed by the Prophet in his teachings.   The Quran makes a war against you justified because you and only you fit the bill of the oppressors in the region.

To hammer home the point that your actions are not representative of Islam and that you are not the "leaders" of Muslims let's go to the very basics of Islam and the core of your mandate. Your mandate is to judge who is the right Muslim based on how they pray and practice their religion. You have crowned yourselves the moral police even though God himself proclaims something different when it comes to defining righteousness.

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in God and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.  -

Surah Al-Baqara, Chapter 2, Verse 177 - the Quran

Notice how God himself defines righteousness not just with acts of worship but also by advising that there's a lot more to having faith than praying in the right direction.  Notice how the other acts of kindness that are attributes of a good person are completely missing from your operations?

Attributes the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) put forward at his first sermon in Medina are;

1. To be faithful and obedient to God
2. To not commit theft in one’s life
3. To not commit adultery
4. To not kill
5. To not falsely make allegations against anybody
6. To not backbite
7. To practice every good and abstain from every evil.

Your "Caliphate" is in violation of every single one of those 7 attributes. The "Islamic" State has no right to use the name of Islam in their actions.   You have yet to show one trait of a Muslim or a follower of Islam.  Rather than defending the rights of the minorities you try and wipe them out. Rather than be productive members of a peaceful society you take up arms against the defenseless and have become oppressors.

You aren't winning over the hearts and minds of anyone and are not fooling any Muslim with your phony calls for Islamic unity. Something you should realize is that Muslims and non-Muslims alike have picked up the Quran and started to protect themselves against your ideology and that of all agents of hate and fear. In fact, it's important to point out that American society has more in common with Islamic values than you could ever dream. Muslims of various ethnicity and political views are free to learn their religion and practice it as openly and as privately as they desire. This freedom results in more and more Islamic scholars are coming from all over the United States. Their work and outreach are cutting off your supply of misguided and disillusioned youths as they now have access to the truth about Islamic values, something you'd never teach anyone.

You can claim all you want to be an "Islamic" state, but your actions prove otherwise.

I call on you and every extremist no matter what side you may fight on, to drop your weapons and lift up books of knowledge. Rather than murdering people that don't agree with you, focus on your selves and practice the values you claim to be fighting for. I call on all the people reading this today to pledge to fight extremism in every form by arming yourself with knowledge.

Pray for and support all of humanity, as every life is precious.

"an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action."

- Prophet Muhammad
