A Suburban Dad's Guest Blog: Yet Another Reason I'm Not on the Short List for Father of the Year

By Rick Kaempfer

Like most parents, I have a morning routine. I wake up the boys, make them breakfast, and then take them to school.

The problem is that the boys wake up and go to school in shifts. They are attending three different schools right now and those schools start at three different times.

My oldest boy Tommy walks to high school. My middle son Johnny has to be driven to junior high. And my youngest son Sean starts his day at elementary school nearly an hour later, so I usually wake him up after I get home from dropping off his brother.

This morning when I came home from the junior high, I went right to work (I work at home). I was very productive, too.

When I looked at the clock I expected it to be about 10:00 AM based on the amount of work I had already done. When I saw it was 8:45, I was confused.

How in the world have I done this much work already? This is usually the time I'm taking Sean to school...

Oh no.

Sean!

I had completely forgotten to wake him up! And the bell was scheduled to be going off any minute!

I hustled him out of the door in record time, but we were still so late it was like a ghost town outside the school. No kids, no parents, no teachers.

I apologized for the thousandth time as he got out of the car, and he actually laughed at me.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

"This makes us even, Dad," he said.

"How do you figure?"

"You know how I'm usually the one that makes us late?"

"Yeah."

"Well now it's your fault too."

Yes it is. Add it to the very long list of parenting moments that will ensure I'll never hear the words..."And now, let's bring up this year's recipient of 'Father of the Year'..."

Some days I'm just humiliated by my incompetence.
