A Mom in the War Room

A Mom in the War Room

By now just about everyone in America has seen this photo of our leaders in the White House Situation Room (more PC to call it "Situation Room" than "War Room" I suppose) watching the operation that got Osama bin Laden. While all of our leaders are expressing the appropriate amount of gravitas, the expression on Hillary Clinton's face strikes me the most. As someone's mother, I can totally relate to what her face suggests she was feeling at the time. I'm reminded of that old saying, the one that goes something like, "What would the world be like if there were no men? No war and lots of fat, happy women eating chocolate."

At the risk of perhaps being seen as sexist or overly political, from acitymom to a former First Lady Mom, I for one am grateful to have a woman like Hillary Clinton in the position of Secretary of State, someone who apparently will not take lightly a decision to put any one of our children in harms way.

  • Agreed. I thought she might actually be watching something involving a woman, be it being used as a shield, being shot, or risking herself to protect an evil husband.

  • A world full of fat women eating chocolates? This world already exists, it's called Wisconsin.

^^^ I think we may be related.

"You're like a well mannered crown. Maybe you're his lost twin, like the movie megamind... but you know, in real life, and without the fish/robot guy."

I agreed with the initial impression that the woman in the room was, well, aghast. But then you raised the old saw about without men, there would be no war. I thought of the three women who have led India, Israel and Great Britain, the only women prime ministers that I can remember off the top of my head . India's Indira Ghandi declared war on Pakistan. Britain's Margaret Thatcher went after Argentina in the Falklands and backed the U.S. positioning of cruise missiles in Europe, and Golda Meir kicked the bejabbers out of some Arab invaders in the Yom Kippur War. I don't disagree with their actions, but I've heard enough people repeat the canard about "if women were in charge," I had to mention the trio.

Is this the same Hilary Clinton who as Senator voted to send troops to Iraq?

  • In reply to Crowned:

Wow ... Hillary goes up for a cough, or even a yawn, and all of a sudden, women should rule the world.
    Yep, makes perfect sense.

A City Mom goes off line for one day and all this squabbling.
    I need some chocolate.
(Seriously though, thank you for all the comments!)

  • Hillary has been all over the news today regarding this picture and damage control. Mrs. Clinton claims her expression is just a case of a seasonal allergy cough...in which case I can only attribute her expression through most of her husband's administration to a bad case of constipation.

I thought the same as you regarding expression representing a woman's perspective of the mission unfolding--but I guess in the craziness of the day she forgot to take a claratin. Love reading your blogs :)
